What is urinary pH and how to control it?

Urine pH is one of the different parameters obtained in a complete body check-up and reflects both metabolic activity and the well-being of the body. In a healthy person, urine pH usually has a value of 6 (however, it can range between 4.5 and 8), so it is slightly acidic (a pH of 7 is considered neutral).

Diet is a factor that actively conditions the value of urinary pH, increasing with strictly vegetarian diets and decreasing with more carnivorous or protein-rich diets. Even so, there are certain situations in which a change in urinary pH value may indicate that something is not working correctly in our body. A value that is too high or too low can favor the formation of kidney stones, urinary tract infection, urinary catheter calcification, or other pathologies related to the urinary tract and the acid-base balance of urine.

For example, a urinary pH value close to 8 with the presence of nitrite in the urine analysis, which is normally not present, indicates the existence of a bacterial infection in the urinary tract. Another case would be the relationship of urinary pH with renal lithiasis, and the different types of kidney stones that cause it: a value below 5.5 will favor the formation of uric acid, cystine, and calcium oxalate kidney stones, while a pH above 6.2 will favor the formation of calcium, struvite, and calcium oxalate kidney stones.

For these reasons, it is essential to control this parameter and apply some corrections when its value varies. Normally, a change in diet is usually recommended, but due to low compliance with dietary measures, it is recommended to supplement the diet with food supplements that help correct the imbalance of urinary pH and thus prevent the formation of kidney stones, among other pathologies. Those food supplements that incorporate "citrate" will help us increase urine pH, while those that incorporate "L-methionine" will facilitate its acidification.

This control of urinary pH is indicated for people with a tendency to form kidney stones, urinary catheter bearers, people affected by recurrent cystitis and urinary tract infection, painful bladder syndrome, overactive bladder, and other urological diseases. For more information, click here.
