The most common warning sign or symptom of renal colic is severe back pain on the side affected by the kidney stone. More specifically, it is a pain between the lower ribs and the hip (For more details, see Blog).
The pain of a kidney stone or renal colic can appear in waves and is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. In fact, the pain of renal colic is one of the most intense pains that exist (For more details, see Blog)
Other symptoms that may appear associated with kidney stones are:
- Painful urination
- Blood in your urine
- Changes in urine (foul odor, increased need to urinate, etc.)
- Kidney stones in the urine
- Fever
- Chills
What causes these symptoms?
The symptoms of a kidney stone are associated with the movement of kidney stones within the urinary system (e.g., ureter). It should be noted that symptoms can vary from extreme pain (in the case of renal colic) to no pain (asymptomatic kidney stone) depending on the characteristics of the kidney stone itself, such as location, size, and shape [1].
What can I do?
If you have any of the previously mentioned symptoms, you should go to the emergency room and receive professional medical attention.
Nevertheless, our recommendation is that you empower yourself and understand everything that is happening to you. In fact, we recommend that you access the myLit-Control App to obtain basic information to understand your pathology, but also to receive recommendations to prevent the next kidney stone.
