6 consejos para evitar los cálculos en verano

6 tips to prevent kidney stones in summer

Aug 22, 2022Devicare

In summer, emergency room visits for renal colic spike in our Hospitals. This is because during the summer months we tend to neglect our diet and drink more alcohol than recommended. If we add to all this the fact that it is hotter and more humid in summer, the result is a ticking time bomb.

If you don't want to have an unpleasant surprise this summer, follow these 6 tips.

1. Stay hydrated

Drink between 10 – 12 glasses of water each day to stay hydrated. Water will help dilute your urine and reduce the likelihood of forming kidney stones that can end up causing painful colic.

Additionally, drinking water will also help you have more energy during the day, avoid headaches after a night out, regulate your body temperature to prevent heatstroke, and even lose some weight.

We know it's hard to remember to drink water. That's why we recommend downloading myLit-Control® App, which will help you drink the water you need by sending notifications to your mobile phone.

2. Moderate your consumption of sugary drinks

Don't overdo sugary drinks during the summer. These drinks reduce the amount of urine produced, increase urinary calcium, and in excess can increase the risk of stone formation.

A Coca-Cola once in a while is fine, but don't overdo it. And always better "zero sugar."

3. Moderate your consumption of processed food

In summer, we love to consume processed foods, but remember that these foods have a lot of salt (they are high in sodium), which increases calcium levels in the urine and can end up causing kidney stones.

Before eating some delicious French fries, popcorn, nuggets, hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, or crepes, remember that in excess it can be bad for your kidneys.

4. Moderate your consumption of animal protein

If you like to eat seafood in the summer, in a beautiful fishing village, you should know that excessive seafood consumption (as well as excessive animal protein in general) can reduce citrate levels (a kidney stone inhibitor) and reduce your urinary pH, which increases the chances of forming stones.

If you are going to consume animal protein, it's best to accompany it with some vegetables.

5. Exercise to lose weight

Exercise! It will help you stay in shape and look good during the summer, but it will also help you reduce that excess weight that is bad for your kidneys. Many studies link obesity to more acidic urine (lower pH) with an increased risk of kidney stone formation.

Of course, don't forget to drink enough water while exercising. We don't want you to get dehydrated!

6. Maintain good urinary health with Lit-Control® pH Balance

If all of the above is difficult for you or you want to ensure good urinary health during these summer vacations, you can supplement with products whose ingredients help inhibit the formation of kidney stones, clinically validated.
