10 Signs That May Indicate Kidney Disease
Filtering and cleansing the blood of excess waste products produced in the body is one of the kidney's main functions. When this function is impaired, the kidney stops filtering the blood, which prevents the elimination of unhelpful or toxic substances. The problem arises when these toxic products accumulate first in the organ itself, causing kidney diseases, and over time, other associated pathologies.
The causes of a decrease in kidney filtration are numerous. Therefore, early diagnosis will help prevent complications. These are the ten possible symptoms that will help detect kidney disease:
- Changes in urination: waking up at night to urinate, known as nocturia, or doing so more frequently and in greater or lesser amounts than normal. This is a characteristic symptom suggesting a urinary tract infection.
- Changes in the appearance of urine: lighter color or presence of blood
- Fluid retention, due to decreased filtration, which causes swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, and hands
- Renal colic (very acute pain in the lower back), due to the presence of kidney stones that block the outflow of urine, is the most characteristic symptom of kidney stones
- Anemia (or blood with low oxygenation), due to kidney failure, in some cases
- Tiredness and fatigue caused by fluid retention and anemia
- Itchy skin, due to the retention of toxins that can accumulate in the skin
- Metallic taste in the mouth and ammonia smell in the breath, due to an accumulation of urea in the saliva
- Nausea and vomiting, in addition to loss of appetite or weight
- Increased blood pressure, due to kidney insufficiency, which can cause hypertension
Taking care of your kidneys is essential to maintain the health of the excretory system and, therefore, the balance of the entire body. This can be achieved with a healthy diet, moderate exercise, and controlling the level of urine pH, as it has been shown to be related to certain diseases of the urinary system. The Lit-Control method allows precisely this: measuring and controlling urinary pH quickly and easily with the aim of restoring the body's acid-base balance.
